How to Calculate a Tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill total by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For example, an 18% tip on an $85 bill is ($85 × 18) ÷ 100 = $15.30, making the total $100.30.

In the United States, 15-20% is the customary tip range for sit-down restaurants. 18% is the most common default. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. For takeout, 10-15% is typical.
