How Sales Tax Works in the US
Sales tax in the United States is set at the state level, not federally. Rates range from 0% in states like Oregon, Montana, and New Hampshire to over 9% in some states. Many states also allow local jurisdictions to add additional tax on top of the state rate — this calculator uses the combined average state + local rate for each state.
How to Remove Sales Tax from a Total
If you know the final price you paid and want to find the original pre-tax price, use the "Remove Tax from Total" tab. The formula is: Pre-tax price = Total ÷ (1 + tax rate). For example, a $107 total with 7% tax works out to $107 ÷ 1.07 = $100 pre-tax.
